As the voice of private capital in Australia, we create a prominent, single voice for our industry and advocate on behalf of our members. We effectively collaborate with government to shape policies that boost investment in Australian businesses and engage with media and key stakeholders to tell the story of private capital. Here are some of our achievements over the past year.

We continued to recognise the need for the industry to remain connected and informed whilst face-to-face events were limited. The digital Private Capital Knowledge Series made available to members filled this void providing members with insights on a wide range of topics presented by industry leaders and subject matter experts from Australia and around the world.

With COVID-19 restrictions eased, the calendar year kicked off with our first in-person event for 10 months, when 150 guests attended our AGM and Gala Dinner in January. In May, the 4th annual VC Industry Forum attracted a record 160 delegates and recently we launched the highly anticipated member-only Australian Investment Conference, which will be held in the Hunter Valley on the 1st and 2nd of September.

The Council continued to deliver its PE101 and VC101 programs throughout the year and we have also been working hard to create a new professional development program, known as Foundations of Private Capital, aimed at helping early career investment professionals to become 'deal ready'.

Over the past 12 months the Council has continued to focus on a broad range of policy and regulatory issues relevant to the industry ranging from a significant overhaul of Australia’s Foreign Investment Review Framework, through to taxation issues and the Your Future Your Super reforms; as well as policies to make Australia an attractive destination for investment and global talent. Engaging with the government on behalf of the industry continues to be a key priority area for the Council, underpinned by our strong relationships with government and opposition ministers and the departmental and regulatory agencies that support them.

Our recently released Yearbook, produced in partnership with Preqin, provides yet another demonstration of the important role we play in delivering high-value insights into private capital activity in the Australian market on an annual basis. With the Federal Government's focus on rebuilding the economy and jobs growth, we spent time developing our first-ever Future Jobs Barometer which identified close to 1500 job vacancies for highly skilled roles across companies that are driving our innovation economy – a clear demonstration of how private capital firms are playing a lead role in growing our economy across all industry sectors.

During the year we worked hard to develop content to build greater awareness of private capital amongst business owners and potential new investors into the asset class. Our work led to the launch of our inaugural Invest Week campaign, which shares insights into the dynamics of private capital investment and the role of unlisted assets as part of diversified investment strategies. Invest Week will continue to play an important role in our annual calendar, complementing our suite of business case studies and private capital research reports and fact sheets.

Driving greater diversity and inclusion within the industry continues to be a critically important focus for the Council. Recently, we put in place a new partnership with McKinsey & Company to bring global expertise to the work that we are doing in this important area. McKinsey & Company will support the Council, as well as the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and our 10 Champions of Change, to identify strategies to help accelerate the industry’s journey in becoming a more diverse and inclusive industry.

ESG is also front of mind for all our members. Now, more than ever, we are investing heavily in supporting our members to navigate their ESG journey through the development of new best practice guidance, and workshops to help firms learn from their peer group in embedding ESG practices into day to day investment and portfolio management.
